You see a notch, but I see…

I was excited to watch the Apple Event that took place this past Tuesday in the new Steve Jobs Theater, and needless to say, I like what Apple has done with the the iPhone X, even the notch. I have enjoyed several conversations with friends, colleagues, and the Twitter population about our feelings towards the recent Apple news. In the aftermath, the most common thing being said was, “Oh man, but that notch… I just can’t look past it” and “So basically, it’s a Samsung.”

My take on the notch was this message I added to our internal conversation here at POSSIBLE Mobile.

It’s true, function and design are crucial for making products that work at scale and on a timeline. I appreciate why Apple had to make the notch, and knowing how design focused that company is, I’m sure that Mr. Ive and Mr. Cook tried their hardest to get a full edge to edge screen with the functional elements hidden.

That being said, the notch is funny and reminds me of a few things that I had some time to design out.  I Hope you enjoy this subtle wink and nod towards having to design function over form.
